About Comic Nirvana
A loooooong time ago in a far away land called Gaston/Pine Ridge/South
Congaree/Cayce I started reading comics.....back when I was in middle
school at Pine Ridge Middle School (I think it has a new name now). I
would have to wait for my mom or older sister to pick me up so I would
walk up to the 7-Eleven located at the entrance to the school. There amid
the Big Gulps and candy was a spinner rack of comics.
I had never read a comic before but the covers intrigued me, so I bought
three of them - The Uncanny X-Men #180, The New Mutants #14 and a
copy of The New Defenders. After that I was so totally hooked!
I kept buying them at the 7-Eleven until I found out about the Bargain Book
and Comic store on Knox Abbott (now named Silver City) owned then by
its original owners Mr and Mrs Defee. Who knew that stores dealt in
comics, posters and such other great items! I was in heaven!!!
After a while Mrs. Defee became a good friend to me. We talked on the
phone quite often and even kept in contact through mail (no email back
then) when I stopped collecting. Over the years I have often wondered
what happened to her.
I would go there each weekend and pick up some comics...I did whatever
it took to get someone to drive me there. My aunt took me a lot as did my
sister. On a few occasions I even blackmailed my eldest sister
Denneauh into bringing me comics. Now Dee Dee helps me here at the
store on Wednesdays - never saw that one coming.
And so, THAT is how my collecting of comics started back in the early
1980's.
As I grew older, I did not read comics as much - the normal life cycle
interfered: high school, family life and then out of state for college. I only
read periodically - just to keep up to speed - because I recognized it was
very addictive!
I had always wanted my own comic book store - if my first profession was
not as I hoped (which it wasn't). So, I started planning. It took about nine
months of organizing and such to get this venture off the ground.
I noticed a need/market for a comic/collectible/pop-culture store in
Lexington, SC. I wanted a casual, laid-back atmosphere that is very kid
friendly. Throughout the years I have learned that if you cannot find your
dream job...make it!
I have a BS in Family and Consumer Sciences from Georgia Southern
University and many years experience with retail theory and practice. I am
a total MS Excel/Access freak! My motto is: It better be on a spreadsheet!
I have a computerized inventory system, that I feel, puts me light years
ahead of others in this area of the industry. At my store you do not simply
get a register receipt...you get a DETAILED receipt of each item. If you are
a subscriber or frequent customer your receipt will also have your name,
address and total discount for the transaction.
I can also quickly access your transaction history to help you remember if
you have purchased something - before you buy a duplicate. I can help
relatives and friends of my customers better determine what to buy as
gifts. At a glance I can spot buying trends and direct them to the perfect
item. This is one of the best features of this system.
Also, if you are looking for something specific I can quickly give you the
answer you need....I won't say: "If I have it - it is over there somewhere".
That drives me crazy when someone does that to me. I am here to help
and guide YOU and not make you feel like an idiot. It is a privilege to be
here helping my customers.
I have also cross-referenced many comics by storyline, cross-over event,
writers, artists, characters and such so as to find even the most specific
items.
So, come visit me at my awesome location - Lexington Pavilion. I am
across from Best Buy and next to Five Guys Burgers. And I totally am not
trying to pretend to know everything about the comic and gaming world.....
God, who could - it is ever changing.
If I don’t have what you want in stock, I’ll get it or help you find it!
